How to store extra virgin olive oil at home so it keeps its qualities
Why the way you store it matters
Extra virgin olive oil is sensitive to light, heat and prolonged contact with air. Storing it well helps it keep its characteristics for longer.
1. Protect it from light
Keep the oil in a dark place or in a container that limits exposure to light. Avoid leaving it for long periods next to a window or under strong lighting.
2. Keep it away from heat
Ideally, keep it somewhere cool and stable, away from the oven, the hob and other sources of heat.
3. Close the container properly
After each use, close the bottle or can tightly again. Less contact with air helps preserve the oil.
4. Buy the right size
Choose a size you can reasonably use up without keeping the container open for too long. For everyday use, have a look at our Arbequina olive oil sizes.
Frequently asked questions
Where should olive oil be stored?
Somewhere cool and dry, protected from light and heat.
Can I keep it next to the hob?
It is best not to, because heat speeds up the deterioration of the oil.
